Lesson #1: Introduction and cultural context
Lesson Objective: Students will be able to analyze the Kanaka Maoli cultural experience reflected in Lāʻieikawai by giving a short presentation on one aspect of ancient Hawaiian culture (e.g. examining the relationships between different sectors of society (i.e. aliʻi, kahuna, makaʻāinana)). Can include translation element. CCSS: 9-10.RL.6
Lesson #2: Characterization
Lesson Objective: Students will be able to cite strong and thorough evidence to support analysis of complex characters by completing a written characterization dialectical journal that identifies (with a quote and a page number) at least two instances of direct and two instances of indirect characterization in Lāʻieikawai and that includes one reason for each instance why detail is included. CCSS: 9-10.RL.1 & 9-10.RL.3
Lesson #3: Kaona and figurative Language
Lesson Objectives: Students will be able to write a definition/translation of “kaona” as it relates to figurative language and poetic devices AND students will be able to locate and analyze at least three specific word choices that are examples of figurative language (kaona). CCSS: 9-10.RL.4
Lesson #4: Complex Characters
Lesson Objectives: Students will be able to write a definition of “complex character” AND Students will be able to support character analyses by citing strong and thorough textual evidence by including at least three quotes from the text about their characters on their body biographies AND students will be able to orally analyze the development of a complex character over the course of a text by describing an event that acted as a catalysis of change and how it affected their chosen character in the presentations of the body biographies. CCSS: 9-10.RL.1 & 9-10.RL.3
Lesson #5: Compare and Contrast with Mele
Lesson Objective: Students will be able to analyze the representation of Lāʻieikawai in Haleʻole’s book and in mele (“Lāʻieikawai” and “Ka Pilina”) by completing a compare and contrast matrix. CCSS: 9-10.RL.7
Lesson #6 Textual Evidence and Inference
Lesson Objective: Students will be able to support inferences drawn from Lāʻieikawai by orally citing at least one example of strong and thorough textual evidence from the perspective of a character of the story during a dramatic talk show. CCSS: 9-10.RL.1
Lesson #7: Mele Composition
Lesson Objective: Students will be able to analyze a particular point of view reflected in Lāʻieikawai by composing a mele from the perspective of a Kanaka Maoli character in the story. CCSS: 9-10.RL.6
